Actonel
Actonel, a product of Proctor & Gamble, is a drug used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is in the family of drugs known as bisphosphonates, which also includes the popular osteoporosis medications Fosamax, Aredia, and Zometa. The medications can also be used to treat cancers that reach to the bone of the patient. Many cancers are capable of metastasizing to the bone, including lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, and others.
Osteonecrosis of the jaw, or ONJ, has been linked to bisphosphonates such as Actonel. This causes the jaw to lose its healing ability after minor injury, such as tooth extraction or other dental procedures. The result is an increased risk for infection or fracture. Long-term antibiotic therapy or other treatments are required to recover from the health problems presented by ONJ.
