Have You Been Injured by Paragard IUD?
The Paragard IUD is a copper, hormone-free intrauterine device implanted into the uterus.
It can last up to 10 years and, according to the manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals, is 99% effective birth control.
However, when Paragard is first inserted and when it is removed, it can allegedly cause serious problems in some people.
What Injuries Are Caused by Paragard IUD?
When patients think about going to their doctor to insert or to remove the Paragard IUD, they may encounter some serious problems which can include:
- Perforation of the uterus
- Usually happens during the first few weeks to months after insertion
- Can lead to infection and scarring
- Migration of the IUD
- Expulsion
- Breakage during removal
- Invasive surgery or hysterectomy due to device breakage
- If pregnancy does occur, there is an increased risk of a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy
While patients do have to consider the pros and cons of any contraceptive device, they should not have to figure out whether the device itself is defective and could cause harm.
Paragard IUD Complications
Teva Pharmaceuticals introduced the Paragard IUD in 1988 and since then it has been the only hormone-free IUD in the U.S. Market.
As mentioned, Paragard is the longest-lasting IUD on the market and can be used for up to 10 years.
However, there have been numerous cases of issues arising from the implantation and/or removal of the device.
- In 2014, four years after being implanted with the Paragard IUD, a patient had the IUD removed. A piece broke off and became embedded in the uterine wall. This led to surgical intervention to retrieve the broken piece.
- In 2015, a patient who had the Paragard IUD implanted for 8.5 years went into the doctor to have it removed. When the doctor removed the IUD, they noticed the “copper coil was missing from the long portion of IUD.” The report also stated that the copper which had come off and was left inside the uterus could be potentially harmful to this patient.
- In 2017, two years after being implanted with the Paragard IUD, a patient in Louisiana went for removal of her IUD. When the IUD was removed, one of the arms of the device broke off inside of the patient’s uterus. This caused the patient to have to undergo invasive surgery to retrieve the broken piece.
What are the Legal Questions?
The most important legal question surrounding Teva Pharmaceuticals Paragard IUD is whether the company failed to warn users of the possible severe health risks associated with the device.
