Sometimes after a car accident you will not notice any immediate symptoms and may assume that you’re medically fine.
However, some symptoms can crop up in the next few hours or days that you won’t want to dismiss.
One of these is nausea.
Nausea after a car accident can be a sign of lots of different problems, and it’s not always serious.
There are several circumstances where nausea may be a sign of a problem.
1. Anxiety, Adrenaline, and Vertigo
During and after an accident, your adrenaline and endorphins go way up. You likely will not feel pain, and you will be in “fight or flight” mode.
However, usually this feeling will eventually fade, and your body will start sending pain signals.
This is why it’s extremely important to see a doctor immediately after an accident. While you may feel fine, you might not be.
You may also respond with anxiety and/or stress after an accident. This is very common since car accidents are very stressful and can be lethal in many instances.
Anxiety can lead to feelings of nausea and many other physical symptoms. Anxiety is a real and common issue.
Most insurance companies not only cover physical damage, but mental damage in the form of pain and suffering. Anxiety could fall under this umbrella.
You could also get vertigo from intense force. This can cause nausea after your car accident, among other symptoms, and can be hard to recover from without the help of a doctor or chiropractor.
2. Concussion
Car accidents tend to cause a lot of physical damage. You may think you’re less likely to experience serious damage during a car wreck at a low speed.
However, even at low speeds, slamming on the brakes causes stress on your body. It can also cause your brain to be jostled and hit the inside wall of your skull. This situation can cause a concussion.
Many people have experienced concussions, and they know the dangers associated.
You may not immediately know that you have a concussion, but you may start to experience the side effects of one right away.
Some symptoms of a concussion might be nausea, poor concentration, dizziness, headache, vision problems, and/or memory problems.
If you are experiencing nausea or other symptoms of a concussion after a car accident, see a doctor immediately for care.
Concussions can be very serious.
You could also end up diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which may require a long road to recovery.
When you are treated, a personal injury lawyer can help you navigate the insurance company’s paperwork.
3. Internal Bleeding
Internal bleeding is one possible explanation of nausea after an accident, and it is very serious and could be deadly if not treated.
We strongly recommend always seeing a doctor immediately after an accident, even when you feel okay.
This is partially because of problems like this that can occur after an accident.
We don’t know what’s happening inside our bodies unless we are checked out by a doctor in the aftermath of an accident.
4. Other Problems in the Body
One other reason for nausea after a car accident could be your body signaling that something else is wrong.
When you feel sick, it might be deferred pain from another area of the body. It could also be your body’s reaction to the shock of a broken bone, a torn ligament or tendon, or something else.
The extreme pain associated with some of these can definitely cause nausea.
Your insurance company most likely has coverage for broken bones or soft tissue injury after an accident.
