The Safest Car Colors: Picking The Right Color For Your New Car

File a Claim If I Get an Accident Citation

It’s really exciting to pick out a new car.

When you pick the make and model, extra features, what price you want to pay, your favorite color, and finding the one with the best safety features for your family, it’s a fun and thrilling experience.

And it’s a big purchase. That’s what makes it all the more disappointing when you find out that you were at a safety disadvantage from the start because of your color choice.

No one wants to get into a car accident, and the car color isn’t something advertised as a safety feature when you’re shopping and comparing.

So why does color matter so much?

Car Color and Crash Risk

You may pick the color of your new car based on your preferences, but that may not be the best choice.

Car color has been found to affect the likelihood that a car will be in an accident.

As you can imagine, different colors are easier to see during inclement weather conditions, and others also have higher visibility during normal daytime hours.

A study was conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre to determine which car colors were the safest.

The study used over 175,000 crash records between the years of 1987 and 2004 as evidence for their study.

The study notes that there are countless shades of car colors out there, but generalized the study to these colors: black, white, blue, mauve, brown, orange, cream, pink, fawn, purple, gold, red, green, silver, grey, yellow, maroon.

What is the Safest Car Color?

Based on this study, there is one particular car color that stood out as the least likely to be involved in an accident.

That color is white.

The study was based on related the crash likelihood of the different colors used compared to white, and there were no significant results that showed any color to be safer than white.

Other Safe Colors to Consider

While there weren’t any significant results showing car colors that were safer than white, there were several that stood out to be in the “safer” category.

Some of the safest car colors are:

  • brown
  • cream
  • fawn
  • gold
  • mauve
  • orange
  • yellow

Car Colors to Avoid

There are several car colors that were shown to have a higher crash risk.

These more dangerous colors are:

  • black
  • blue
  • grey
  • green
  • red
  • silver

Most of these unsafe colors tend to be lower on the visibility spectrum, and many of them blend in with your surroundings while driving, such as the dark grey color of the road or the dark of night.

The Most Unsafe Color For Your New Car

As you can imagine, since darker colors seem to be the most unsafe vehicles because of how they don’t stand out in various lighting conditions, the most unsafe color would be black.

Black cars are especially more dangerous at dawn and dusk, with a 47% higher crash risk than white cars during this time.

This is likely due to the low visibility during dawn and dusk hours. Lighting is still low, and people may think it is light enough to travel without headlights.
