The University of Chicago Medicine Emergency Department and Trauma Center is a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center as of 2018 which means they are ready to handle critically injured or ill patients 24/7. At UChicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital and its Burn and Complex Wound Center, they are also designated as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center since 1990.

The University of Chicago Medicine Emergency Department and Trauma Center is the South side’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The University of Chicago Medicine Emergency Department and Trauma Center  provides trauma, acute care, and critical care surgery for burns, blunt trauma, motor vehicle accidents, and gunshots/stab wounds.
