Easter Food Safety: Keeping Your Celebration Happy and Healthy
From Your Friends at VanDerGinst Law
Easter is a time for celebration, family gatherings, and delicious meals. Whether you’re serving up a honey-glazed ham, dyeing Easter eggs with the kids, or enjoying a backyard brunch, food is often at the heart of the holiday. But nothing can spoil a celebration faster than foodborne illness.
At VanDerGinst Law, we care about your safety—on the roads, at home, and even around the dinner table. That’s why we’re sharing a few simple tips to help you keep your Easter feast both festive and food-safe.
Easter Egg Safety Tips
- Keep it cool: If you’re hard-boiling eggs for decorating or eating, make sure to refrigerate them within two hours of cooking.
- Don’t eat eggs used for decoration: If eggs have been sitting out for more than two hours, or if they’ve been handled a lot for display or egg hunts, it’s best not to eat them.
- Use food-safe dye: Always use food-grade coloring if you plan to eat dyed eggs.
Cooking and Serving Food Safely
- Check temperatures: Use a meat thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to a safe internal temperature. Ham should reach at least 145°F, and poultry 165°F.
- Avoid cross-contamination: Keep raw meat separate from fruits, vegetables, and cooked dishes. Wash cutting boards, utensils, and hands often.
- Refrigerate leftovers: Don’t let food sit out too long—two hours is the max. Leftovers should be promptly refrigerated to prevent bacteria growth.
Cleanliness Counts
- Wash hands before handling food and after handling raw meat or eggs.
- Clean all surfaces, dishes, and utensils thoroughly before and after use.
