The workers’ compensation laws in most states require that employees who are injured in the course of their work are to be paid by the employer for lost time, medical care, and permanent disability.
Workplace injuries are costly to both employees and employers.
According to the National Safety Council, “work-related medically consulted injuries totaled 4.5 million in 2016, and total work injury costs were estimated at $151.1 billion.
Costs include wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, motor vehicle property damage, and employer costs.”
Although 2016 marked the fifth consecutive decrease in
total recordable incidents, medical costs continue to increase, and employees
often need assistance to obtain the compensation they are entitled to receive.
The top leading causes of work-related injuries are:
- Non-impact such as lifting, carrying, throwing, pushing, and/or turning,
- Repetitive motion can result in stress or strain.
- Moving objects striking a worker
- A worker bumping into or stepping in/on an object.
- A worker being crushed, pinched, pinned, or caught in equipment.
- Falling on the same level
- Falling onto a lower level
- Slip and/or trip where no fall occurred but injuries were sustained by the worker catching themselves
The frequency of these types of injuries in 2016, the most recent year statistics are available, is shown by the chart below.
